Chef and restaurateur, Thomas Keller is a world renowned chef winning multiple awards including best Californian chef and best American chef. In 1978 the mayor of Yountville renovated the building into a restaurant. Don and Sally Schmidt owned the French Laundry for much of the 1980s, and the early 1990s.
Thomas Keller spent nineteen months raising $1.2 million from acquaintances and investors to purchase the restaurant, then quietly opened in the summer of 1994. Over the next few years the restaurant earned numerous awards. In 2005, he was awarded the three star rating in the inaugural Michelin Guide for New York for his restaurant Per Se, and in 2006, he was awarded three stars in the inaugural Michelin Guide to the Bay Area for The French Laundry.
